Graduating from the Lisbon Theatre and Film School in 1991, he began his professional career as an assistant director to Manoel de Oliveira, later working with directors such as Raúl Ruiz, João Mário Grilo, and Vicente Jorge Silva, among others.
He established himself as a film producer in 1997, working out of Lisbon with Contracosta Produções, and in 2003 also from Paris with Les Films de l’Étranger. Between 1998 and 2013, he produced works by directors such as Pedro Costa, Luís Fonseca, Edgar Pêra, Hugo Vieira da Silva, Lorenzo Bianchini, Vimukhti Jayasundara, and Wang Bing, among many others, developing production projects across Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, China, Sri Lanka, Mozambique, and Brazil.
His films received widespread critical and public acclaim, participating in competitive sections at festivals such as Venice, Cannes, Locarno, Rotterdam, Turin, Yamagata, Rio de Janeiro, and many others. He is the first Portuguese producer to have a selection of films published and distributed worldwide by the prestigious Criterion Collection.
He currently teaches Film Production and History of Film Production Models in the Film course at the Cascais School of the Arts, which he has coordinated since 2018.
